Anthropic launched Claude in 2023 as a safety-focused alternative to ChatGPT. Two years later, the product has grown into a full AI platform with desktop apps, a coding CLI (Claude Code), an agentic workspace (Cowork), and enterprise-grade API access. The model lineup has been refreshed multiple times, with the latest generation (Opus 4.7, Sonnet 4.6, Haiku 4.5) shipping in early 2026. Here is a detailed overview of the platform, its models, pricing, and practical business applications.
Claude AI, also known as Claude.ai, is an AI-driven chatbot specifically designed for generating text. Developed by Anthropic AI, a startup founded in 2021 by former OpenAI team members, the creators behind ChatGPT, Claude AI has made significant strides in the artificial intelligence landscape. In late March 2024, the Claude 3 Anthropic language model surpassed GPT-4 on the Chatbot Arena platform, where users evaluate and compare different AI chatbots to determine a "winner."
Built on Anthropic's Constitutional AI language model, Claude AI leverages the transformer architecture, which has become the benchmark for natural language processing tasks. This architecture efficiently manages sequences of any length, effectively considering the context and relationships between words in various positions.
Claude AI, sometimes referred to as Claud AI, is capable of answering questions, composing texts, generating ideas, solving mathematical problems, and assisting with software engineering tasks. Its versatile functionalities make it a powerful tool for a wide range of applications, from creative writing to technical problem-solving and even robotic process automation. The safety features of Claude AI make it suitable for various computer use scenarios in both personal and professional settings.
If you're already familiar with popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini, you'll easily understand how Claude AI works. If you're just beginning your journey with AI assistants and chatbots, don't be intimidated, the platform's operation is incredibly simple and resembles a classic chat window (imagine you're chatting with a colleague on WhatsApp or Slack).
You send the chatbot any message, whether it's composing a poem, solving a math problem, or writing code for your website. The bot responds in real-time within the chat, allowing you to review the answer and continue the conversation by requesting the next task or asking to improve the previous response. This seamless interaction makes Claude AI an excellent tool for various computer use scenarios, from casual conversations to complex problem-solving.
Anthropic organizes its models into three tiers: Opus (highest capability), Sonnet (balanced performance), and Haiku (fastest, most cost-efficient). Each generation has improved on the last, with the current lineup (early 2026) being the 4th generation and its incremental updates:
Haiku 4.5. The speed-first model, best suited for high-volume chat, lightweight summarization, basic Q&A, and real-time user experiences. API pricing: $1 / $5 per million tokens (input/output). Supports a 200K token context window.
Sonnet 4.6. The workhorse model that benchmarks near Opus-level on coding tasks with better instruction-following and tool reliability. Best for everyday business tasks, coding, content generation, and data analysis. API pricing: $3 / $15 per million tokens. Supports a full 1M token context window.
Opus 4.7. The most capable model, purpose-built for complex reasoning, agentic coding, multi-step planning, and advanced analysis. API pricing: $5 / $25 per million tokens. Supports a full 1M token context window. Recommended when tasks require maximum reasoning depth.
In May 2025, Anthropic has introduced the 4th generation of models: Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4.
Claude Opus 4. Has the highest reasoning capability in the Claude 4 family and was designed for complex analytical tasks, advanced problem-solving, and sophisticated reasoning One of its key pros is superior performance on challenging cognitive tasks, best-in-class reasoning abilities. However, using it can also result inhigher cost and slower response times compared to Sonnet 4.
Claude Sonnet 4. Smart, efficient model optimized for everyday use, balances capability with speed. Some of its main advantages is that it provides faster responses, is more cost-effective, and still highly capable for most tasks. However, it may not match Opus 4's performance on the most complex reasoning challenges.
Sonnet 4 is positioned as the practical choice for daily interactions, while Opus 4 is the premium option for tasks requiring maximum reasoning power. The choice between them depends on whether you prioritize peak performance or efficiency for your specific use case.
Claude Sonnet 4 is freely available, but to use Opus 4 you need to upgrade to Pro.
So, what's new in Claude 4 Sonnet by Anthropic? As I mentioned earlier, it makes sense that Anthropic aims for Sonnet to directly compete with OpenAI's GPT-4, and of course, Anthropic hopes users will appreciate the new features of Claude AI. Claude 4 Sonnet has outperformed Anthropic's own Claude 3.5 Sonnet in many aspects, including speed, cost, and test results.
Claude 4 Sonnet by Anthropic Claude 4 delivers top-tier performance across reasoning, coding, multilingual tasks, long-context handling, and marketing automation.
It has better performance than earlier generations. While the responses tend to be rich and detailed by default, you can easily guide the model toward more concise outputs by adjusting your prompts accordingly.
When upgrading from earlier model generations to Claude 4, users typically experience significant improvements in overall performance quality. The enhanced capabilities make the transition particularly worthwhile for applications requiring sophisticated reasoning or nuanced communication..
Looking ahead, I must say that it seems to me Anthropic has released the most powerful language model available for free use. For example, Claude Opus has already shown better results in programming tasks compared to GPT-4 or Gemini Pro. And with the release of Claude 4 Opus, the bar for efficiency has been raised even higher.
Anthropic positions Opus 4.7 as the most capable coding model in the Claude lineup, with step-change improvements in agentic coding tasks over previous generations. It can be effectively used for building AI agents. GitHub will be using it as the model powering the new coding agent in GitHub Copilot.
Each generation has shown substantial gains in coding benchmarks. The latest Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.7 models can independently write, edit, and execute code, easily translate code, and is ideal for updating legacy systems or efficiently migrating codebases. This makes it an invaluable tool for software engineering and machine learning tasks.
What's more is that both Claude Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 can use the web to extend their thinking and provide better results. They have also introduced Claude Code that supports background tasks via GitHub Actions and native integrations with VS Code and JetBrains and can be a perfect coding assistant.
In Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet, the team introduced the enhanced visual capabilities. Sonnet 3.5 has surpassed Claude 3 Opus in tasks that require analyzing and recognizing visual elements, whether it's charts or illustrations. Anthropic's Sonnet AI easily interprets graphs and diagrams, and accurately transcribes text from images, even if the image is damaged. Additionally, Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in generating interactive charts and can even create presentations based on JSON data.
For the 4th generation of models, it seems that the main focus was on reasoning and coding skills. However, you can still use the model to generate images and infographics.
Please design a visually appealing slide for my presentation that includes a graph illustrating the monthly traffic changes. Use the traffic data from the screenshot of my table.
In 2024, Anthropic introduced a new feature called Artifacts. This innovative tool allows Claude AI to generate code within a dedicated interface window and instantly view the rendered outcomes, such as SVG graphics or fully functional websites, in real time. This release marks the first installment in the forthcoming Claude 3.5 model family, signaling that Anthropic is gearing up to unveil even more impressive advancements in the next iteration of the Opus model
Create a visually appealing and creative paragraph design in the form of an "info-box" for my article. Add soft blue shadows, rounded corners, and a subtle animation for the section (e.g., the section with text slightly lifts when hovered over). Additionally, I want key bolded words to have a blue outline appear around them when hovered over..
The Artifacts feature in Claude AI by Anthropic arguably stands out the most among the other Sonnet 3.5 updates. It's not so much a feature, as many reviews describe it, but rather a conceptually new approach to interacting with a neural network among AI chatbot platforms.
The essence of this feature is that when a user asks Claude AI to generate content, such as code snippets, text documents, website designs, to draw a picture, or even create a game, the artifacts appear in a special window next to your conversation with Claude AI. For example, if you ask to create a design and HTML code for your landing page, you'll not only see the code but also how your page will look after publishing, displayed in the adjacent window.
Artifacts in Claude AI are an innovative feature that allows users to generate and view content, such as code, designs, or games, in a dynamic workspace. The generated artifacts appear in a separate window alongside your conversation with Claude AI, enabling real-time editing and visualization of your creations.
This feature enhances productivity by allowing users to immediately copy, download, or publish their work, making it easy to share with colleagues or implement directly.
After reading some incredible examples, I followed a user's recommendation and asked Claude to create a Checkers game. My colleague and I were then able to play it directly in the Claude AI chat window. This creates a dynamic workspace where you can create, view what you've created, and, most astonishingly, edit your creations in real-time within Anthropic's Claude AI. It's simply amazing!
Here is an example of how it looks to work with Artifacts in Claude interface.
Create a web-based checkers game and make it playable within Artifacts.
Additionally, after receiving the result, Claude AI will offer you the options to copy the code, download it in the required format, or publish it directly. This is extremely convenient because you can create a landing page or registration form and immediately share the results with colleagues.
With Claude 4 Sonnet and the Artifacts feature, Anthropic is setting the stage for a significant leap forward in AI capabilities, offering users enhanced functionality without the barrier of subscription fees. This strategic move not only showcases Anthropic's commitment to innovation but also reinforces Claude's position as a formidable competitor in the AI chatbot landscape.
